December-January 2010, I Ave an idea
A Tailor-Made Profession
The only useful career advice I ever got was at the age of ten. While all my friends wanted to be firemen, policemen or detectives, I wanted to be Captain Kirk, commanding the starship Enterprise – that would be NCC 1701, the only one that really matters. Who could resist having a really big ship with really big guns under their control?
But it was not meant to be. At the time, my cousin, who seemingly could predict the future, wisely explained to me that chances were slim for our level of technology to progress to the degree that such ships would be possible by the time I graduated from school. As it turns out she was right. So I abandoned my ambitions for galactic exploration and adventure, and progressed through school like everyone else. Now all this talk of careers and technology gave me an idea. Since schools aren’t really helping steer young students toward fields they would find enjoyabale, why not combine something they do provide with caree guidance? Take a soft drink dispenser and integrate career guidance software into it! Students come up, plug in their interests or a description of the kind of life they want, and a slip of paper comes out with suggestions for a career!
