Iraqi education in the ER
Iraq's once thriving educational sector boasting some 20,000 schools in Baghdad alone is nearing collapse after years of violence that did not spare student, teacher or administrator. Fear of kidnapping, violent attacks or roadside bombs are forcing fearful parents from sending their kids to school.
More than 600 teachers were killed in last year's academic year alone and students are exhibiting behavioral problems in classrooms where sectarian feelings are rampant. Many schools shut down for months at a time and the ones that do open need running water, power, and sanitation facilities.
